What Makes The Jiffy Bunion™ Different

A bunion isn't just a bump to shave off. It is a three-dimensional alignment problem: the first metatarsal drifts outward while the big toe leans toward the second toe. The Jiffy Bunion™ corrects that root cause in three steps:

  1. Precise cut: Working through 1 mm incisions with a specialized micro-burr under live X-ray guidance, Dr. Moore makes a controlled cut in the first metatarsal without stripping the surrounding soft tissue.
  2. 3D shift: The bone is glided back into a straight, natural alignment.
  3. Flush fixation: Two titanium headless screws sit flush inside the bone, so there are no bulky plates and usually no hardware removal.

When needed, a small Akin cut in the big toe bone fine-tunes alignment, and a second-toe hammertoe or crossover toe can often be corrected during the same outpatient visit. For a deeper comparison with traditional open surgery, read Minimally Invasive vs. Traditional Open Bunion Surgery.

Your Consultation in Virginia Beach

A visit with Dr. Moore is an educational, low-pressure evaluation. It does not commit you to surgery:

  • Weight-bearing X-rays on site so Dr. Moore can measure your bunion angles and joint space under natural body weight.
  • A hands-on forefoot exam covering bunion flexibility, big-toe motion, arch mechanics, and any second-toe crowding.
  • A side-by-side X-ray review in plain English and a personalized plan timed around your work, family, and travel.

Many mild, moderate, and even select severe bunions can be corrected this way. If your X-rays show advanced big-toe arthritis or severe instability, Dr. Moore will explain whether a different operation, such as a 1st MTP joint fusion or a Lapidus fusion, will give you a more durable result. See Am I a Candidate? for questions to bring.

Recovery at a Glance

  • Day 0: Outpatient surgery. You go home the same day, walking as tolerated (limited at first) in a protective post-op shoe.
  • Day 5: First clinic visit for a dressing change and X-ray check.
  • Week 1+: Showering once cleared. Week 2: stitches out; driving typically resumes around 2 weeks.
  • Week 6 (average): Back into supportive regular shoes. Toe spacers continue through Week 12.
  • Weeks 10–12: Return to running and impact exercise as cleared.

Every patient heals at their own pace. See the full Day 1 to Week 12 Recovery Guide.

Insurance

When a bunion causes pain and functional limitation that hasn't improved with wider shoes or conservative care, bunion correction is considered medically necessary, not cosmetic, by most commercial health plans, Medicare, TRICARE, and Virginia Medicaid. Once you choose a surgery date, the surgical scheduling team (757-321-3307) handles prior authorization and verifies your coverage.

When can I wear regular shoes again?

On average, patients move into wide, supportive regular shoes around 6 weeks after surgery, once X-rays confirm healing.
